Sleep on the islands or in Naha

The choice of hotels in the Kerama Islands in Okinawa falls into two groups: island properties and Naha hotels with a boat pickup. There is no single right base, and the choice changes what kind of trip you take. The Zamami Village Tourism Association says day trips to the village are possible but recommends staying overnight, for the sunsets, the local izakayas and the star-filled night sky.1 Visit Okinawa Japan makes a similar point about the water, saying that to explore the underwater environment properly you should base yourself on Tokashiki, Zamami, Aka or Geruma.6

A base in Naha is the practical alternative. Naha has the hotels, the airport and the pickups, and the Keramas are close enough to the main island for a day trip.7 Our full-day listing collects guests from 19 pickup options in Naha, so a hotel in the city and a boat day can be a complete plan with no ferry to book. The trade is that you never see the islands at dusk or at dawn.

So the question is what you want from the evenings. If sunsets, a village izakaya and a quiet night are the point, sleep on an island. If the reef is the point and the rest of Okinawa is on your list, sleep in Naha and treat the Keramas as a day out. The rest of this page covers each island's lodging, how to book it and how a Naha base works.

Zamami: the busiest of the villages

Zamami is the island with the most choice, and a search for Kerama Islands hotels turns up guesthouses, hostels, pensions and a few resorts across the group.13,14 Visit Okinawa Japan says visitors can choose from small guesthouses, called minshuku, hostels and more upscale pensions, with Japanese-style and Western-style rooms.13 The tourism association's own list filters by room type, with campsite, condominium, accessible room, mixed dorm, Japanese room, female dorm and Western room.15

Where you sleep on Zamami depends on the area. The tourism association divides the island into three: Zamami Area, the most populated, with the most restaurants and shops; Ama Area, a 15-minute walk away, with a beach where turtles can often be seen; and Asa Area, the most remote, where much of the landscape remains untouched.16 A room near the port is simplest for boat days, and a room at Ama puts a turtle beach at the door.

Moving around is easy once you are there. Visit Okinawa Japan says renting a car or an electric bike is the best way to get around the hilly island, and that the local bus reaches Ama and Furuzamami beaches.17 Japan's tourism board says you can walk from the port to the two finest beaches in 20 minutes.18 The Zamami island page of this site covers the beaches in detail.

Naha Airport to Tomari Port

How long the transfer takes, by mode

  • Monorail to Miebashi14
  • Taxi to Tomari15
  • Bus 26 or 9930

The monorail figure excludes the 10-minute walk from Miebashi Station to the port.19,20

Aka, Geruma and Tokashiki

Aka is the quieter alternative. Visit Okinawa Japan says most Aka accommodation is in the village around the port, and Japan's tourism board gives around 260 permanent residents for the island.21,26 Nishibama Beach is 10 minutes by bicycle from the port, which makes a bicycle the natural way around.27 The bridge to Geruma means a second island is a short ride away.24

Geruma is the most limited. Visit Okinawa Japan says there is only one guesthouse on the island and more accommodations on nearby Aka, so Geruma is a place to visit more than a place to book.23 The village tourism association says Aka and Geruma share a calm, laid-back atmosphere and that both hold the protected Kerama deer.28 A day walk across the bridge is enough for most travelers.

Tokashiki sits at the other end of the scale. Visit Okinawa Japan says most Tokashiki accommodation is laidback guesthouses with a few premium resorts, and that the campsite near Aharen Beach rents tents.14 Tokashiki is also the closest island, with a high-speed crossing of 35 minutes.25 If you want a resort-style stay, Tokashiki is the island to look at, and the village boats there are a separate service from the Zamami ones.

How to actually book a room

Booking is where many trips go wrong. The tourism association says many village accommodations are not listed on major booking websites like Booking.com, and that it recommends browsing its own list and contacting the properties directly.2 In most cases that means filling out a contact form on each property's website, and the association is clear that it cannot make a reservation on your behalf.9

Do not leave it to chance. The association warns not to expect to find an accommodation once you get to Zamami Village.2 Boats frequently sell out too, especially in the high season, April to November, so book the boat and the bed together.5 Online booking for the village boats opens at most 55 days ahead.8

Prepare for the island economy. The tourism association says the villages have no convenience stores, most shops take only cash, and the ATMs on Zamami and Aka are closed at night and on some days, with no currency exchange on the islands.4,3 A one-night stay still needs reef-safe sunscreen and motion sickness medication, both of which the association recommends.29,30

A Naha base and the boat day

If you stay in Naha, the base is easy. Our listing includes pickup from 19 options, among them DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Naha, Hotel AZAT Naha, Orion Hotel Naha, Hotel JAL City Naha, Okinawa Harbor View Hotel, Hotel Aqua Citta Naha and Okinawa Sun Plaza Hotel, plus 7-Eleven stops. A hotel near one of those stops means a short walk to your boat day, which is a practical way to pick a hotel.

Check the pickup before you book a room. The listing's own guidance is to let the operator know your accommodation, since early reservations are prioritized and if the shuttle car is full transport may not be provided. The half-day Kerama listing starts at Miegusuku Port with fixed pickup locations, and the day-with-lunch listing includes pickup from a designated point.

For the airport, the tourism association gives a taxi ride of about 15 minutes to Tomari Port, a monorail ride of about 14 minutes plus a 10-minute walk from Miebashi Station, or bus 26 or 99 in around 30 minutes.19,20 The port sits on Route 58 about 700 m from Miebashi Station, which is worth knowing when you choose a hotel.31 Choose the base for your plans on both sides of the boat day.

  • The boat and the bed together, since boats often sell out5
  • Contact properties through their own forms if booking sites show nothing2
  • Ask each property about its own rules and room types15

Pack3

  • Cash, as most shops take only cash and ATMs may be closed3
  • A swimsuit and reef-safe sunscreen29
  • Motion sickness medication for the crossing30

Plan3

  • A slack day in Naha at each end for weather10
  • The route from Naha Airport to Tomari Port19
  • Tell the tour operator your hotel so pickup works

Which month, which room

Season changes the booking pressure. The tourism association puts the high season at April to November for the village boats, and Japan's tourism board says the best time for swimming around Tokashiki is between May and October.5,32 Those months are when to book first. Winter has its own draw, described below.

The whales are a listing detail, not a promise: our listing offers whale watching only from 12 January to March, and says the winter water is about 22 degrees Celsius. A winter stay on an island suits someone who wants whales and quiet, while a winter stay in Naha suits someone who wants a day on the boat and warm food in the evening.

Whichever you choose, keep a day of slack. Boats between Naha and Zamami Village may be cancelled in strong wind or high waves, a decision made each morning around 8 AM, and the tourism association says it cannot be held responsible if the weather stops you leaving the next day.10,33 That is the strongest argument for putting a Naha night at each end of an island stay.
