There are three honest ways to spend one day on the Kerama reefs: a guided boat day with pickup, a ferry plus a guided snorkel, or a ferry and your own rules. Here is what each one asks of you.

Quick look
A Kerama Islands day trip from Naha comes down to three shapes. First, an operator collects you from Naha, takes you out on a boat and guides the snorkeling. In the second, you take a ferry to one island and join a guided snorkel there. In the third, you ride the village ferry and run the day yourself. Each shape trades money, time and effort differently, and none of them is wrong for the right person.
Visit Okinawa Japan says tour operators offer day trips from Naha, and that the islands are close enough to the main island for a day trip to be viable.4,5 The Zamami Village Tourism Association says day trips are possible but recommends staying overnight, so the one-day versions are honest compromises.6 A day gives you the water and a taste of the islands, and an overnight gives you the evening and the morning light.
This page compares the day versions. If you are weighing a night on the islands instead, the where-to-stay page covers that, and the ferry page covers boats, fares and booking in detail. The tour-or-ferry choice mostly turns on three things: whether you want pickup in Naha, whether you are comfortable running a day by phone and timetable, and how much of the day you want to spend actually in the water.
Kerama listings side by side
| Listing | Length | Notes | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our full day | 7 hours | Pickup in Naha, 2-3 spots | $83 |
| Day with lunch | 9 hours | Boxed lunch, two points | $51 |

| Naha or Chatan | 7 hours | 2-3 spots, no landing | $89 |

Every price is a from price taken from the listing, so the final fare depends on the date and the group.
Our listing is the guided boat day. It lasts 7 hours, includes pickup from one of 19 options in Naha, and splits the day into a 30-minute car ride, a 1-hour speedboat crossing, snorkeling stops of 1.5 hours, 2.5 hours with lunch and 1.5 hours, then the same crossing and ride in reverse. The instructors speak English, Japanese and Portuguese. It starts from $83, with a rating of 4.4 from 891 reviews.
What you get in the water is spelled out. The listing says every staff member is a certified instructor with first aid training, that guests wear a wetsuit or life jacket for safety, and that water and tea are served on the boat. It also says the tour does not include island hopping, and that the islands visited vary with the weather and sea conditions. Sea turtles are not promised: the listing says guests may not see any.
The newest reviews give a fair picture. The ten most recent English ones on file are all five-star, from July 2026, and guests describe an easy boat ride, friendly guides, good gear and turtles seen. One guest says it is close to a self-guided open snorkel with directions on where to stay in the water, and another says staff helped a friend who cannot swim with a float. If you want an operator to handle every step, this is the format.
Time on the clock
Lengths are the durations on each listing and include the crossings.
The middle option adds a ferry to a guide. Two listings in this style take you to Tokashiki Island, one on the ferry and one on the high-speed boat, where a shuttle bus carries you to Aharen Beach and a boat goes out to snorkel with an instructor. The ferry version is limited to 4 participants, crosses in 70 minutes each way and gives about 4.5 hours at Aharen Beach including lunch and free time.
Times are seasonal and worth reading before booking. From 1 October to 28 February the ferry listing leaves Tomari at 10:00 and returns from Tokashiki at 3:30 pm, with no lunch from November to March. The high-speed listing leaves at 9:00 am and returns at 5:00 pm in the same months, and it is cancelled if the boat cannot run, a call made around 8:00 AM on the day. Children from 0 to 5 may ride the boat but may not snorkel on that listing.
Money and reviews differ too, and anyone assembling Kerama Islands vacation packages of their own can price each day separately. The ferry version starts from $95 with 158 reviews at 4.3, and the high-speed version from $109 with 42 reviews at 4.3. The high-speed listing notes a 100 yen environmental cooperation tax for guests aged 16 and over, so carry coins. This shape suits people who like one island and a long beach afternoon more than a full day across several waters.

Village boat
A ferry on your own is the cheapest on paper and the most work in practice. The Zamami Village Office lists the adult ferry fare as 2,900 yen one-way and 5,510 yen round-trip from Naha, and the high-speed fare as 3,950 yen one-way.1,14 You also pay the 100 yen island tax, and you reserve the return at the same time as the outbound.9,15 Online booking opens at most 55 days ahead.8
The sea has rules that matter. Individual swimming in Zamami Village is limited to designated areas at Ama and Furuzamami beaches on Zamami and Nishibama on Aka, and swimming outside those zones needs a guided tour led by a licensed guide.2 Visit Okinawa Japan says joining a snorkeling tour is always the safest way to explore the Kerama reefs.7 So a do-it-yourself day is a beach day, with snorkeling in the marked area.
The land has limits as well. The tourism association says the islands have no convenience stores, most shops take only cash and the ATMs are closed at night and on some days.16,10 Boats frequently sell out, and a day trip is one of the cases it names.17 If any of that sounds like a chore, a guided day removes it.

A ferry-and-guide day
Start
The day starts at Tomari Port in Naha with a ferry or speed boat bound for Tokashiki Island.
Crossing
The ferry crossing is listed at 70 minutes.
Landing
A 10-minute shuttle bus takes the group from the port to Aharen Beach.
Snorkel
The group boards a boat for snorkeling with an instructor, which the listing says suits first-timers.
Beach time
The listing gives about 4.5 hours at Aharen Beach, with lunch, free time and swimming.
Return
A 10-minute bus ride and a 70-minute ferry bring the group back to Tomari Port.
Day length is the plainest difference between the listings. The half-day trip is 3 hours, our listing and the Naha-or-Chatan full day are 7 hours, the day with lunch is 9 hours and the high-speed Tokashiki listing is 9 hours. A longer day is not a better one by itself, and the half-day trip keeps the crossing to 30 minutes each way.
Time in the water is where the formats split. The half-day listing offers 2 hours of snorkeling in a designated safety area near the closest islands, with a life jacket mandatory. Our listing offers stops of 1.5, 2.5 and 1.5 hours, and the Naha-or-Chatan listing offers 2-3 spots with no island landing. A ferry-and-guide day trades some of that for hours on a beach.
Check who can join before you pick. The half-day listing does not permit guests under 5 or over 59, and under 20s need parental consent. The Naha departure of the Naha-or-Chatan listing sets an age limit of 6 to 59 in summer only, while the Chatan departure runs year-round for ages 6 to 64. Our own listing asks for parental consent for minors and applies a health screening.

Before you book
Any boat day can fail on the sea. Our listing says the destination may change or the plan be cancelled by the weather on the day, and the village boats can be cancelled too, a call made each morning around 8 AM.3 A guided tour can change the site on the day, while a ferry cancellation leaves you on the quay.
Seasickness is the other quiet risk. The Zamami Village Tourism Association recommends motion sickness medication for anyone prone to seasickness on the ferry, and our listing makes the same point and says medication is available by reservation.11 One recent reviewer calls the day a 10 out of 10 unless you get seasick. Take the tablet before you board, not after you feel it.
Cancellation terms differ between products. All the GetYourGuide listings on this page offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund, but the half-day listing adds a minimum of 10 participants or the tour may be cancelled the day before. On a village ferry, a paid online booking is refunded automatically if the boat is cancelled for weather.18
