Quick look
The ferry from Naha to the Kerama Islands that this page covers leaves from Tomari Port, a port known as Tomarin that sits on Route 58 and about 700 m from Miebashi Station.8 The village tourism association describes two vessels that serve it: the high-speed Queen Zamami, which leaves from the north pier, and Ferry Zamami 3, the slower and roomier boat.1,2 They do not share a pier, and that catches first-time travelers out.
Leave time to walk between the ticket office and the boat. The Zamami Village Office says the walk from the Tomarin ticket office to the high-speed boat pier takes about 10 minutes.9 If you arrive from Naha Airport, the tourism association gives a taxi ride of about 15 minutes, which can drop you at either terminal.10 The monorail to Miebashi Station takes about 14 minutes plus a 10-minute walk, and bus 26 or 99 from the domestic terminal takes around 30 minutes.11
A tour avoids the puzzle. Our full-day listing includes pickup from one of 19 options in Naha, among them DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Naha, Hotel AZAT Naha and Orion Hotel Naha, and the port transfer is a 30-minute car ride. The note on paid parking at the port, 500 yen per day, applies only if you drive there yourself. You step onto a boat chosen by the operator, and the pier puzzle becomes the operator's problem.

The high-speed boat is the one most day trippers want. The tourism association says it takes between 50 and 70 minutes to reach the islands and that there is more than one departure a day.1 The speedboat crossing on our own listing is 1 hour each way, which shows how the guided day spends its time. Japan's tourism board lists the same service by island: Zamami with 2 trips taking 50-70 minutes, and Aka with 1-2 trips taking 50 minutes.16
The ferry is slower and gentler. Ferry Zamami 3 takes about 1.5 hours to Aka Port and 2 hours to Zamami Port, according to the tourism association, so the figure you need depends on which port you are heading for.2 The association also says it was renewed in 2017, has a lounge where passengers can lie down, free Wi-Fi and counter seats facing the sea.2 If you tend to feel seasick, pack medication whichever boat you take.17
Tokashiki is separate and shorter. Visit Okinawa Japan gives 35 minutes on its high-speed boat and 70 minutes on the slower service, which runs once a day.18 The kotsu-okinawa ferry page lists the Tomari to Tokashiki route as 2 round-trips daily by high-speed boat plus 1 round-trip daily by ferry.19 Tokashiki is run by its own village, so its boats, fares and booking are not the Zamami ones described here.
The Zamami Village Office publishes its fares in yen, and they are the only fares worth trusting because the village runs both boats. For an adult leaving Naha, the high-speed Queen Zamami costs 3,950 yen one-way and 7,510 yen round-trip.3 Ferry Zamami costs 2,900 yen one-way and 5,510 yen round-trip.4 Children, groups and disabled passengers pay other fares, listed on the same page, and the village can change them, so check the current table before you budget.
One small extra applies to everyone who is not exempt. The village collects a 100 yen island entry tax, called the Churashima tax, per person from visitors boarding a ship to Zamami Village.20 It is easy to forget when you are counting coins at a ticket window. A cash-only village is a reminder to carry yen, and the tourism association says most shops accept only cash.23 The islands have no convenience stores either, so coins and notes for small purchases matter.24
Set those fares beside a guided day. Our listing starts from $83 for 7 hours with the crossings and the instructors in the price, while the ferry fare covers the boat alone and leaves gear, guiding and lunch to you. The half-day listing at the lower end starts from $44 and lasts 3 hours. Compare what each includes, not just the number, and remember that a GetYourGuide from price is a starting point that varies with date and group size.

There is no single easy route for a ferry from Okinawa to the Kerama Islands. The tourism association lists three ways to reserve: online, by phone to the Naha ticket office, or at the counter in Tomari Port.5 Online booking can be made at most 55 days ahead, and phone booking at most 1 month ahead.5,6 Reservations cannot be made by email under any circumstances, so do not wait for a reply that will not come.27 Pick the route that suits where you are: the counter in Tomari Port suits anyone already in Naha, and online or phone suits anyone planning from home.
Payment works differently by route. An online booking is made first without paying, then an email explains how to pay, and payment is possible only between 20 days and 3 days before departure.12 A phone booking needs no payment during the call, and you pay at the main ticket office in Tomari Port before boarding.13 The Zamami Village Office timetable adds that passengers should board at least 10 min before departure.14
Seats run out. The tourism association says boats frequently sell out and recommends booking in advance, especially in the high season, April to November, or for a day trip.25 A return ticket cannot be bought at the Zamami or Aka counter before the day of departure, so reserve the way home when you reserve the way out.15 If you would rather not manage any of this, a booked tour holds your place from the first morning.

Boats between Naha and Zamami Village may be canceled in strong wind or high waves, and the decision is made each morning around 8 AM for that day.7 The Zamami Village Office timetable carries the same warning, telling travelers that schedule changes or cancellations can be decided because of rough seas and to check for updates before the trip.28 Check the village's boat status page on the morning you travel, not the night before.
Money is returned in one case that matters. If you paid for an online booking and the boat is cancelled because of the weather, you are refunded automatically.29 If you booked a guided tour on GetYourGuide, the listing says the destination may change or the plan be cancelled by the weather on the day, and free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before for a full refund. Those are different rules for different products, so read the one you bought.
Plan slack at both ends. If you are sleeping on the islands, a cancelled boat can strand you, and the tourism association says neither the village nor any other organization in it can be held responsible if weather-related cancellations stop you leaving the next day.30 A day trip with a flexible ticket carries much less exposure, because you sleep in Naha either way. Rough days can also delay the return, so keep your last evening in Naha free and avoid a flight on the same night.

The decision to cancel or not is made each morning around 8 AM for that day.
Once you are on Zamami or Aka, a small municipal boat joins them. The tourism association says the Mitsushima connects Zamami Port and Aka Port daily with 6 departures each day, and that no reservation is required for that stretch.22 Elsewhere it says the crossing takes about 15 minutes and runs 4 to 6 times a day, so check the day's sheet before you plan the last connection.21 The timetable differs between dates, and the village warns that it can change with the sea.28
The link to Tokashiki is different. National Parks of Japan says daily trips between Aka and Zamami need no reservation, but traveling between Aharen Port on Tokashiki and Aka or Zamami does, and it can be made through the Zamami Village Office the day before.31 That rule makes a loop over three islands possible, though it takes planning, and it is aimed at people who are staying overnight.
If you are tempted to island-hop from Naha in a single day, note that our listing says it does not include island hopping and that the islands visited vary with weather. The where-to-stay page of this site covers the overnight version, and the tour-or-ferry page weighs a guided day against a ferry day. Both Zamami and Aka have their own ports, so a visitor who lands at one and leaves from the other needs the Mitsushima to link them.22
